About the Island

Bald Head Island is a very special place. We love having our friends and family visit the island and experience why we love it so much. Here are some things to do while on the island...

Beaches and Water

BHI has three beaches, south, east and west. We spend most of our time on east, its smaller and more quaint. South is larger and has more room to play bocce. It also usually has smaller waves so we launch the sailboat from south beach. West beach is the Cape Fear River, great place to run the dogs and watch the sunset, it is also where we got engaged!!

FLOATING IN CAPE CREEK
Grab some floats, any will do, put your cooler on a boogie board and relax! Check the tide chart to see where you should launch from. The two points to float between are Beach Access 1 (Brooks's Beach) and The Pavilion dock.

CANOEING - Canoes can be rented from the Riverside Adventure Company, located near the marina, call (910) 457-4944.

CRABBING AND CLAMMING - Bring your crab traps and enjoy an old-fashioned pastime of catching crabs in the Bald Head Island creeks. This is one of our favorite island activities, there is a nice quiet dock on middle island that is perfect for crabbing. Or walk up smith island and do some clamming.

Other Activities

FISHING - Bald Head Island offers great fishing all year. Offshore - tuna fishing begins during March. Billfish and Marlin run in May. In early June, enjoy the annual fishing rodeo, when contestants compete for the largest catch of wahoo, tuna and dolphin.
Surf Fishers go to East Beach in spring for red drum, pompano and blue fish. Pass a leisurely afternoon by renting a boat or canoe to fish for speckled trout or flounder in the creeks. Then accompany the naturalist to the beach to view the nesting or hatching sites. Space is limited. Call for reservations. Bald Head Island Conservancy: (910) 457-0089
